What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's 316? Stainless Steel?
It is common to add alloys to steel to increase the desired properties. Steel that has been treated as marine grade, known as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of environment that are corrosive.
There are many different types from stainless steel with 316. Some of the most popular types are L F, N and H variations. Each differs slightly, and each is used for an entirely different purpose. L refers to 316L as having a carbon content below the 316.
The 316 and the 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although they're comparable to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both exhibit better corrosion resistance and are more robust in high temperatures. They cannot be harmed with heat treatments and can be easily bent and stretched.
What is the difference between 316 as well as 316L? Stainless Steel
316L stainless-steel has less carbon than 316. Even with its lesser carbon contents, 316L is very similar to 316 , in almost every way. The cost is similar and both are tough and resistant against corrosion, making it a suitable choice for extreme stress situations.
However, for projects that require a significant amount for welding, then 316L may be a more suitable choice since 316 is more prone to welding corrosion as compared to an 316L (corrosion within the weld). However, 316L can be annealed in order to prevent welding attenuation. It is also a suitable stainless for high temperatures and high corrosion which is why it is extremely popular in marine and construction.
The 316L and 304L are not the same. 316L is the most cost-effective option. The 304 is comparable to the 304L but the price is much lower. Neither is as durable as the 317 and 317L which are stronger, have higher molybdenum contents and better in general resistance to corrosion.
